Involta Management Team.jpg

In October, Involta announced plans to build a data center in Armstrong County, Pa. UPMC, a leading integrated healthcare provider and insurer, will be the anchor tenant and selected Involta to build, own and operate the multi-tenant facility in the Northpointe Business Park. The high-security, concurrently maintainable data center will also house mission-critical computer systems and provide related managed services for other Involta clients from the vibrant Pittsburgh technology sector.

Pittsburgh-based UPMC is the largest nongovernmental employer in Pennsylvania, with 60,000 employees, more than 20 hospitals, more than 500 doctors’ offices and outpatient sites, and a 3 million-member Insurance Services Division. Affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences, UPMC ranks No. 12 in the U.S. News & World Report Annual Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals.

DuctSox and Involta Collaborate to Design Effective,
Energy-Efficient Cooling for Data Centers

In the world of data centers, it’s important to keep cool. That’s why Involta and DuctSox have collaborated to develop DataSox™, the data center industry’s first customizable ventilation system. DataSox consists of an innovative round, porous fabric HVAC diffuser system that distributes air into data center cold aisles with much lower turbulence. With directional spot cooling capabilities, DataSox can manage the highest density IT equipment racks while increasing energy-efficiency and decreasing costs.

At the Marion, IA facility, Involta augmented metal ductwork with DataSox, lowering the delivery point and greatly reducing entrainment, resulting in a 40 percent reduction in airflow with improved air distribution and consistently cool temperatures. Reduced turbulence makes it easier for fans to draw and distribute air, allowing for more energy-efficient cooling. Ultimately, the retrofit was a key part of actions that reduced the facility’s electric utility usage by 80,000-kWhr/month. Involta currently uses the DuctSox system at several of the data center facilities, with plans to implement DataSox into future designs.

DataSox is the data center industry’s first customizable ductwork system with onsite directional adjustability. Together, Involta and DuctSox have optimized performance standards and revolutionized overhead cooling designs in data centers.
